What is Windows Explorer?
Windows Explorer (also called File Explorer) is the file management tool in Windows that lets you browse, open, and organize files and folders on your computer and network.
Part 1: Mapping a Network Drive
Mapping a drive assigns a drive letter (like Z:) to a shared network folder, making it easier to access.
Steps to Map a Network Drive:
- Open File Explorer (Windows + E).
- In the left pane, click on “This PC.”
- At the top, click the “Map network drive” button in the toolbar.
- Choose a drive letter (e.g., Z:).
- In the Folder field, enter the network path: \\ServerName\SharedFolder
- Check “Reconnect at sign-in” if you want it to stay mapped after reboot.
- If needed, check “Connect using different credentials” and enter your username/password. (Used to manually type your domain account)
- Click Finish.
Part 2: Pinning Folders to Quick Access
Quick Access is the section at the top of the File Explorer sidebar where you can pin frequently used folders.
Steps to Pin a Folder:
- Navigate to the folder you want to pin.
- Right-click the folder.
- Select “Pin to Quick Access.”
To Unpin:
- Right-click the pinned folder in Quick Access.
- Select “Unpin from Quick Access.”
Tips for Better Navigation:
- Use Search in the top-right of File Explorer to quickly find files.
- Use View > Details for more information about files (size, date modified).
- Use Ctrl + Shift + N to quickly create a new folder.
Optional: Create Desktop Shortcuts
- Right-click any folder or mapped drive.
- Select “Create a Shortcut” for quick access from your desktop.
- Confirm by selecting “Yes”
